In the Beginning… There is the Earth
Description of project:
The projected car-park occupies a ground area of 120 × 180 metres. The lowest of the 6 underground levels will lie at a depth of 16 metres.
The structure lies in the context of the Marseille Oligocene Basin (Stampian) formed from continental detritic deposits (marls with a higher or lower sand content, pudding stones cemented to a greater or lesser extent) covered with rubble. This rubble was added during the 19th century to reclaim land from the sea. In addition, old wharf structures are masked by the later rubble, in particular the La Joliette wharf from 1845.
Hence the excavations had to be carried out behind a diaphragm wall nearly 23 metres high.
Mission entrusted to FONDASOL:
G5 diagnostic geotechnical study, including writing a report of geotechnical assumptions needed by the consulting engineers responsible for the execution calculations. This report concerns the following geotechnical elements:
· Diaphragm walls,
· Foundations by pre-casts and footings,
· Permeability and level of water table prior to pumping
Date mission carried out: December 2011
