ARLES (13) - Flood protection for the northern parts of Arles – Study of transient and stabilized flows

Project owner: SYMADREM
Project manager: EGIS EAU
Contractor: Entreprises BUESA/BEC RAZEL

Description of project:

In the context of the Rhône 2007–2013 Plan looking into the relationship between the river and the city of Arles, plans are being made for a dyke intended to protect the northern areas of the city from flooding.

A curtain of sheetpiling will reduce the infiltration rates and the hydraulic gradients within the dyke to a permissible level, and will also protect it against the risk of internal erosion.

Mission entrusted to FONDASOL:

G5 diagnostic mission consisting in modelling the flow through the dyke in the event of flooding. This mission concerns the linking area between the pumping platform and the SNCF railway embankment. The calculations performed using the PLAFLOW and PLAXIS (finished elements) programs made it possible to determine:

  • The penetration and the profile of the sheetpiling protecting the dyke,
  • The penetration and the profile of the sheetpiling protecting the adjacent SNCF embankment.

Date mission carried out: 2nd half of 2011
